Our
collection - San
Diego, California In 2006, we were encouraged by an artist friend of ours to find out more about our Fred Sabater art collection. Shortly thereafter, we began an internet search which revealed bits and pieces about the artist. We were pleasantly surprised to discover that, according to some internet sources, Fred Sabater Jr. is an internationally known artist appreciated by many people, however, many of those links do not exist today. In addition there is very little information about the artist on the internet, so part of this site is devoted to what we have found, existing links, and Fred Sabater art collector contributions. Our collection of Fred Sabater original oil paintings were purchased directly from the artist in 1990 in San Diego, California. At that time we were novice art collectors and had no background info about Fred Sabater. My wife and I liked the paintings, so we just bought them. Each original painting is framed and signed by the artist. The painting on the left was signed by Fred in our presense at our home in San Diego. Since 1990, this small collection has remained in our home, inviting pleasurable comments from family and friends. |

welcome your comments and appreciate any further information you
might have regarding our personal Fred Sabater art collection and/or
information you would like to share about the artist. email Fred Sabater Signature |
Described
as bold and large, the signature of artist Fred
Sabater
displays the year under an elongated R or F which is hard to
see. In our collection the year is 1990. Fred left us his business card which shows his embossed signature dated 86'. |
In our collection most of the signatures appear in the lower left hand corner of the painting, but upper right in one painting. ![]() Signature > large image |
Howard
Layte, owner of Country
Gallery,
in Escondido, California, discusses Fred's signature on the Wet Canvas Blog 03-04-2006 |
"In
1972 when I sold paintings door to door, I ran into Fred Sabater. He
said he would paint 25 20x24
paintings for me for $25.00 each. I said
OK. When I took delivery, I was shocked to see the signatures. Most in the skies bold and large. Everyone a different scene, they sold and nobody complained about the signatures. My wife liked this one so still have.> This thread reminded me of him so I googled him. Found him on ebay selling a portrait of him and wife for 7,000.00. So tomorrow my signatures become Large and flambouyant. On his the F is under the elongated R." - Howard Layte |

On our website we have more examples of artist Fred Sabater's signature for comparison beginning in 1968 which will appear in the Internet Search and Collector Contributions . The signature has changed slightly over the years but very similar in all cases to this signature in 1999 from the "Fred Sabater and Wife Self Portrait". ![]() |
Fred Sabater Jr. Filipino Artist INTERNET SEARCH: Over the years we have attempted to gather information from various links on the internet, many of which no longer exist. We acknowledge that the original source information derived from those links may not be accurate. We also appreciate the contribution of other collectors who have sent us photos of their Fred Sabater paintings and who have contacted us with internet information they have found from time to time. About the Artist: This information was copied directly from the internet about four years ago. "Born in the 1920’s, international artist Alfredo Tan Sabater Jr. (Fred Sabater) truly possesses the soul of an artist by capturing the emotions of life on canvas. He started painting at the age of 7 but really didn’t work seriously until his teenage life. During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, Fred served in the army resulting in a heightened idealistic respect for life that has fervently influenced his style. Influenced also by his former mentor, the late Fernando Amorsolo under which he apprenticed, are very much evident in his works. Recognized as one of the first Filipino abstractionists of his time and a magnificent portrait artist, an abstraction in oil (4’x6’) titled "The Genesis of the Philippine Revolution" sold for $75,000, which is in the Consulate Gen. Office in L.A., CA.. Some of his works include "Dragon Child" 30x40 $32,000, "The Warrior" 31x52 $26,000, "Tineka Shallon…the Feeding" 24x36 $18,000, and many others. His exhibitions have spanned worldwide. Some of the proud owners of Fred Sabater’s works include Mrs. Imelda, President and First lady Fidel Ramos, Rear Adm. Herman Kossler, NFL player Stanley Richards, and Magic Johnson purchased one of Sabater’s paintings for $2,000,000.00."est DISCUSSION: If you look around the web you will see people asking questions about Fred Sabater. Fred Sabater collector writes: "The painting is my mother-in-laws.......she either thinks that she bought it at a Schwark Furniture store in the 70's (I am not sure if the company is still in business, but they were known for quality furniture for several decacdes in the Detroit metropolitan area), or she bought it at a art show at a local community college, Macomb County Community College, in Michigan." |

Fred Sabater painting 1976 From collector of Alberto Tan Sabater paintings: "My parents purchased two of Mr. Sabater's paintings back in the 70's. They were living in San Diego at the time. Later they inherited another Sabater painting from my grandparents. Their original two are native American scenes. The one they inherited from my grandparents is a ship or junk of some sort, painted with very bright colors. Oranges and reds." |

Fred Sabater painting from 1977 From one of our favorite Fred Sabater collectors in Texas: Hi Jeff and Amanda! How lucky you are! Note: This painting by Fred Sabater is stunning! One of our favorites and a very similar to the painting directly above on the left. "I have a 1977 oil painting by Alfredo Sabater Jr that was given to my dad before I was born. He passed it down to me but knew nothing about it, and so as a result, I also know nothing about it. I would love to know the history behind the painting and how much it is worth. My husband and I run a private animal rescue shelter and we would love to sell the painting to a collector who would cherish it before it is ruined (we have nowhere to store it) while also raising money for the shelter." |
